The Eleventh Sunday After Trinity
The Resurrection of the Dead
August 3, 2008
NKJ 1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which
I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which
also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you -- unless
you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also
received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that
He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen
by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the
present, but some have fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen by James, then by
all the apostles. 8 Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out
of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be
called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace
of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored
more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with
me.
Paul’s Teachings are of God
Paul is writing to the Corinthian church—a church that Paul started and dearly
loves—he also feels responsible for any misunderstanding of the things of
Christ—and thus it is interesting for us to share in the lesson Paul is
teaching—earlier in his letter Paul made it very clear that the teachings are
not his but are from God
NKJ 1 Corinthians 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with
excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I
determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4And my speech and
my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the
wisdom of men but in the power of God
As the text indicates, Paul considered himself to be special—but not by anything
he did or knew—but because he was chosen to be a witness and, therefore, a link
to Christ Jesus—Paul was a witness of Christ in that Christ revealed Himself to
Paul—yet it is not Paul’s experience that he is sharing—as if Paul were somehow
special—but it is the link between Christ and the promise of the Scriptures that
Paul is trying to make clear—Paul was preaching the same as the other
apostles—but he was preaching with more intensity
Old Testament Prophecies
Paul was an expert on the Old Testament—and he understood the prophecies of the
Old Testament—surely Paul was familiar with the following verses
NKJ Isaiah 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare
His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the
transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the
wicked -- But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor
was any deceit in His mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has
put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His
seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in
His hand.
NKJ Psalm 16:8 I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right
hand I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will rest in hope. 10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor
will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 11 You will show me the path of
life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures
forevermore.
The Resurrection and Salvation
Paul understood that Christ’s crucifixion did not save us—His resurrection saved
us—today many of us wear various forms of crosses as a symbol of our
faith—perhaps it would be more appropriate to wear little open tomb jewelry
Another thing we have to understand is that most of the people in Paul’s writing
audience believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead—there were many
witnesses to corroborate the testimony of that event—however, many did not
believe that there would be a resurrection on Judgment Day
NKJ Matthew 22:23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: "Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies,
having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for
his brother. 25 "Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he
had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 "Likewise
the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 "Last of all the woman
died also. 28 "Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she
be? For they all had her." 29 Jesus answered and said to them, "You are
mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 "For in the
resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels
of God in heaven. 31 "But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not
read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God
of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the
living." 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His
teaching.
Paul knew that our Christian faith is rooted in a resurrection of
believers—Jesus was glorified through the resurrection—if we are to be
glorified, we also will be glorified in Christ through our resurrection
NKJ Luke 14:12 Then He also said to him who invited Him, "When you give a dinner
or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich
neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13 "But when you
give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. 14 "And you will
be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the
resurrection of the just."
NKJ John 5:22 "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to
the Son, 23 "that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who
does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 " Most
assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me
has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from
death into life. 25 "Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now
is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will
live. 26 "For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to
have life in Himself, 27 "and has given Him authority to execute judgment also,
because He is the Son of Man. 28 "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming
in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 "and come forth --
those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done
evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 "I can of Myself do nothing. As I
hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will
but the will of the Father who sent Me.
We Will Inherit a Heavenly Body
NKJ 1 Corinthians 15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is
sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 43 It is sown in dishonor, it
is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44 It is sown
a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and
there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a
living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 However, the
spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. 47 The
first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from
heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and
as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. 49 And as we have
borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly
Man.
That heavenly body will be ours for eternity—we will put it on when our Lord
calls us home
NKJ Philippians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also
eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
Christian Believers Will Never Die
Consider Jesus’ discussion with Martha when her brother Lazarus died and was
placed in a tomb for four days—Jesus told her that we will all rise again on the
last day
NKJ John 11:23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha said
to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." 25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me,
though he may die, he shall live. 26 "And whoever lives and believes in Me shall
never die. Do you believe this?" 27 She said to Him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that
You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."
Jesus the First Fruits of the Resurrection
NKJ 1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren,
concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no
hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will
bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word
of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will
by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend
from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet
of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and
remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in
the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one
another with these words.
There will be a resurrection—and we will be joined with the first fruits of the
resurrection—Jesus Christ—for all eternity—we will be in our heavenly bodies
ALL GLORY BE TO GOD!
